Chelsea Boss, Frank Lampard Backed Ruben Loftus-Cheek After Been Criticised

Chelsea are unhappy with comments made by Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher about Ruben Loftus-Cheek, according to The Athletic.

Loftus-Cheek 24, saw his career rocked by a chronic Achilles injury that ended his 2018/2019 season early and required most of last season to recover from.

He was handed a rare start against Brighton & Hove Albion on Monday night, and Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has revealed he may see further action in that role.

"Ruben obviously has been out for a long time and even his return to play was pretty broken by the lockdown and the restart when he was just available to play a few games," Lampard said

"They are players that will come back and give me lots of options, so it was interesting for me to see Ruben in that number 10 position, he can certainly give us lots in those areas."

Lampard's comments come after pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher criticised Loftus-Cheek's performance on Monday night.

"I thought he was really disappointing. I don't think Loftus-Cheek can complain. He's been given games. I don't think he's ever grasped his chance yet. There's going to come a point when they're going to cash in and get £25 million for him."

Carragher added: "If you get your chance, you have to grab it. He's had his chances now."

The Athletic subsequently reported that these comments had not been well-received.

An insider told the website: "It was so harsh to jump on Loftus-Cheek after he's been out of the game so long."
